HOW & WHAT TO SUBMIT:

Our primary focus at Falling Star is STORY. A good story can come as a five line poem or a 1,200 word short story. We're looking for clearly defined places, characters and events in every piece.

There are no reading fees. We read and respond to each work personally. This makes for slower going, but we like our job and will take the time to enjoy what you're sending. We accept simultaneous submissions, but do let us know if your work is accepted elsewhere.

To send us a story or series of poetry, go to our Submissions page and fill out the form. Attachments aren't opened unless we request them. If you have corresponding artwork, please note in the body of your submission.

Please provide contact info with each submission. IF YOU HAVE A SPAM FILTER, ADD US. IF YOU CHANGE E-MAILS AFTER SUBMITTING, PLEASE INFORM US. Include a phone number with your manuscript. If we cannot reach you after a manuscript is selected for publication we will try to notify you otherwise - many manuscripts have been dropped from our publication over the years because the writer went incommuncado.

REGULAR SHORT FICTION

We publish work that describes a person, place or event. Strong characterization and detail. Word range: 400 - 1,600 words. Slightly over word range OK if story needs to wind itself up, but over 2100 words will receive a form rejection. 

We often offer editorial assistance to all writers, suggestions that we think help the work flow better or make the characters clearer before the story is sent forward to the editorial board for review.

Please don't send more than one short story at a time.

POETRY

Submit up to five pieces per issue, but please send these in one single submission. Preferred length 5-30 lines, will accept longer.

Works we publish tend to be descriptive of people, places, and moments in time we have all experienced - or hope we never have to.  

We publish 10-20 pieces per issue. No song lyrics please.

ILLUSTRATION

Open to all types including photography, ink, pen/pencil, watercolor/guache and classic mediums. Submissions should be sent via JPEG or with a link to your website (preferred). Payment vaires upon placement and size of illustration in our magazine. Writers who have corresponding photography/artwork to accompany their work are encouraged to submit it upon acceptance.

PAYMENT

Contributors receive two copies of Falling Star for one time publication rights plus payment when applicable - $10 per poem and $25 per story. Payment for cover illustrations vary per issue. Writer retains all permanent rights to their work. Additional copies of the magazine available for purchase on our website.

All artwork, photography, and/or illustrations should be sent as a JPEG attachment .

We ask that you please include city/state/country residing in; one of our themes is to show our writers come from diverse areas but a high quality of work is universal. Replies depending on length of work, usually within four weeks. All work is read and receives personal reply from the editors.
